A false teacher, by definition, is someone who teaches false doctrines within a particular group or community of people. In the case of the Christian faith, truth and error are established on the basis of the Holy Scriptures, the Bible; so a false teacher, within the ranks of Christianity, is someone who teaches doctrines that are contrary to the Word of God.
Taking into account that expensive jewels are the most susceptible to being counterfeited, it is not strange that Christian communities are constantly threatened by false prophets who twist, subtly at times, the fundamental doctrines of our faith. That is a threat that the Church of Christ has had to face throughout its history, and against which we are warned in the Bible over and over again. "Beware of the false prophets – says the Lord in Matthew 7:15 – who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are rapacious wolves." And in another place he returns and warns that "many false prophets will arise, and will deceive many … For false Christs, and false prophets will arise, and will do great signs and wonders, in such a way as to deceive, if possible, even the chosen "(Matthew 24:11, 24).
The fact that a person is capable of great wonders and miracles, or pretends to have the power to do them, does not accredit him as a teacher of the truth. The Lord Jesus Christ clearly taught that "false prophets will do great signs and wonders"; and in Matthew 7: 21-23, after pointing out that the tree is known by the fruit, it declares: "Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day: Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name we did many miracles? And then I will declare to you: I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers. "
The fruit that is expected from a teacher of truth is not that he intends to perform miracles, cast out demons or prophesy, but that he teaches the truth of God revealed in His Word. Therefore, it is essential that, Bible in hand, we learn to distinguish the false from the true and, what is even more subtle, the "true" truth of the "half-truth". To fail to discern, moved perhaps by a religious fear, is to endanger our souls and the testimony of the truth.
