Behold, I am sending you Elijah the prophet before the day of the Lord comes, a great and terrible day. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. (HNV) Looking at Bible prophecy is something like looking at a mountain range: We see the peaks one after the other, but it is difficult for us to know the distance that separates them. An example is Isaiah 9.6. The prophet will see his prophecy fulfilled at the birth and rise to the throne of Hezekiah, although in our New Testament perspective we understand that same prophecy as Messianic, referring to the person of Jesus at his first coming. Another of the great mysteries for the prophets of the Old Testament is the church, the opportunity that God gives to the pagans, or the first coming of the Messiah as a suffering servant. In this perspective I would like to look at the text of Malachi: Elijah had to come to prepare the day of the Lord. John the Baptist was a precious type and partial fulfillment of this word: (see Luke 1:17). John prepared the way for Jesus in the spirit and power of Elijah. But why partial fulfillment of Malachi's prophecy? The prophet speaks of the day of the Lord, "great and terrible day" (Mal 4.5), nevertheless Jesus, in his first coming did not come to judge, but to inaugurate the year of the Lord: When Jesus debuts his ministry, he reads the prophecy of Isaiah 61, and stops right after the "acceptable year of the Lord" (Luke 4:19) omitting the second part of the prophecy; "The day of vengeance of our God" (Is 61.2b). Why this omission? If the Elijah who was to come according to Malachi should prepare the Lord's day, and Christ, at his first coming did not come to bring the judgment of the Lord's day, it means that someone with a ministry like Elijah's and John's will come to prepare the second coming of Christ. Effectively this is what is coming, but Luke gives us a precious clarification to understand this coming of Elijah at the end of time; John came "in the spirit and power of Elijah": This means that this Elijah can come to restore all things, as Jesus said (Mark 9.12-13), without being a single physical person, but rather a spirit and a power, that of the prophetic Spirit of Christ. Before the coming of Christ, God will prepare the church for the ministry of the last days, and will do so by shedding the mantle of Elijah on many of his servants, who will serve in the spirit of Elijah, preaching two great truths; the return of the heart of the parents to the children; that is Grace, the Father's desire to turn his heart to his children. The other great part of Elijah's ministry in the last days will be the preaching of the return of the children to the parents, that is, the repentance that will begin in the church. So the pivots of the prophetic ministry to come will be Grace, as in the times of the reformers, and repentance, which prepares the definitive coming of the Messianic Kingdom. In recent years the church has been visited in Toronto with a new focus on the Grace and the heart of the Father (see the book by Jhon Arnnot, pastor of the exvineyard church in Toronto, "The Blessing of the Father", Editorial Peniel). The other great visitation of God to the church has been Bronwsville, Pensacola: The axis of that revival is repentance, the return of the heart of the children to the parents. These two revivals in recent years are a prophetic sign: The mantle of Elijah comes upon the church: We can expect in the coming years to see the prophetic ministry in the church restored and enhanced in the spirit and power of Elijah, John, Calvin, Luther, Wesley, Finney, Jonathan Edwards, the revival of Azusa Street in California, of Brother Branham, of Reinard Bonke … We live in a particular time in which the prophecy of Malachi takes on a special relevance; the Spirit will raise prophets to prepare the church for the coming of the Lord.
