"Brethren, I am not writing you a new commandment, but the old commandment that you have had from the beginning; This ancient commandment is the word that you have heard from the beginning. 8 Nevertheless, I write you a new commandment, which is true in him and in you "(1 John 2: 7-8a).
Our generation is allergic to the word commandment. In a world that is so tenaciously opposed to absolutes, the "openness of mind" to the different styles of life and thought are obligatorio. But that is not the conception of life that we find in the Scriptures. God has no room to speak of commandments, ordinances and statutes, of obedience, submission and service. In the battlefield of ideas, it is very easy to try to undermine the essential principles of the relationship that man as a creature maintains with his Creator. But such attempts express nothing other than the internal desire of sinners to become their own monarchs. The ideas proposed by the "intelligent" will never replace those of the wise and omniscient God, nor will they ever become the criterion by which the Sovereign Lord will judge all things.
However, rebellion against the divine lordship is not only a matter of unbelievers. The children of God are especially exhorted to obedience (1 Peter 1:14), because we also react incorrectly and sinfully to the orders that heaven has so clearly communicated to us.
Obedience is a seal that marks those who have truly been born again. It is not optional. It is very easy for us to conclude that we are obedient. Naturally we are inclined to make the assessment of our spiritual condition taking into account only those areas in which there is no conflict with any idol of the heart. We see many areas "under control". We think of already overcome weaknesses, in pious habits that exceed the media, and we conclude that we are obedient children. But, what do you think of those other areas in which you have not decided of heart to agree with God? What of the practices for which you are willing to fight so as not to eradicate them from your life and for which you know that your spiritual life is not at the level that it should be? Have you allowed the Sovereign's entrance into every corner of your heart?
Religious syncretism is not something that is out there. It's something that we carry deep inside. Oh that God help us to be spiritual iconoclasts, ready to tear down ALL the idols of our hearts!
